balanced approach to the teaching of this dynamic social science discipline. They
emphasise on the areas in core theory, statistical and econometric skills (including
computer science), the dynamics of growth and development in the less developed countries
in both the theoretical and empirical contexts with an emphasis on the political economy
of the development process, main currents of thoughts of the founding fathers of the
discipline, economic thoughts of great Indian nationalist leaders including Rabindranath
Tagore, basic tenets of the Marxian Economics, emerging issues in the Indian and West
Bengal economies, and an interdisciplinary understanding of the society and economy as a
whole, along the institutional approach.
Specialisation at the postgraduate level
includes such basic areas as Econometrics and Statistics, Advanced Monetary Theory and
Banking. Rural Economics, and International Trade and Finance (including a future plan for
Financial Economics). Courses in each subject area are detailed in separate modules with
reference to specific reading materials.
Class-room teaching is supplemented by
occasional seminars, special lectures and extension lectures on
contemporary issues and problems in the subject area. |
